The reason companies have drastically different experience with ERP systems points to the core of ERP success – implementation. It is only when the company has done the implementation right that all the promises of complexity reduction and operational efficiency are realized.

Here are the different aspects involved in making ERP implementation a success:

  • Involve everyone: Because the ERP system is going to impact the entire business cycle, it is a wise idea to involve everyone at the initial stages of discussion. This will also ensure there are fewer bottlenecks and arguments down the road.
  • Planning the changeover: Before starting to implement, make sure you have a changeover plan. This includes clearly defining your goals and expectations from the ERP system, as well as a study of the present business environment and how it will benefit.
  • Plan your budget: An ERP implementation may require substantial investment, especially if you have special requirements. So make sure you assess the expenditure clearly before you begin.
  • Set up performance metrics: Don’t do what you can’t measure. Enterprises need to develop and put in place key performance metrics to measure the impact the ERP system is creating. Only then can it be determined whether the implementation was a success or not.
  • Knowledge transfer: Even the best system in this world is no use if the staff can’t use it. Make sure there is sufficient awareness about the need and scope of the new ERP system, and that employees are provided rigorous training in its efficient use.

Implementing an ERP system successfully is a holistic process that takes time, commitment and training.
