With new technologies like big data and cloud computing making communication networks play an even bigger role, security becomes a central topic. IT admins need to make sure that not only do the new systems integrate seamlessly, but also that the information security is guaranteed. But the turf is changing very fast, and it’s becoming difficult to keep pace with technology.
As networks take the center stage in time to come, here are some important security considerations:
- Stress testing: Even if there is a single weak point in the network, it is enough for an attacker to bring down the entire system. That means every point of contact needs to be tested thoroughly, and policies reviewed closely for potential loopholes.
- Scaling up: Be aware that as you scale up, the network takes on more of an undesirable attribute: complexity. Not only are complex networks harder to maintain, but they also open up novel ways for attackers to compromise security.
- Being pragmatic: An experienced security admin knows that a system can never be perfect, so one shouldn’t try and aim for perfection. Rather, think about how security can be maximized within the given resources, and more so with the help of creative solutions.
- Incremental additions: Don’t try to plan a perfectly secure network all in one go, because that doesn’t happen. Rather, you should get adequate security for now, and keep making small improvements to it on a regular basis.
The job of a security admin is never easy, but by following the best practices, the chances of an attacker breaking in can be minimized.
