India and China are two major players in the cloud computing arena. Subscription based service model and cost effectiveness are two important factors that drive more and more Indian companies and SME’s to enter and utilize cloud-based applications.

NASSCOM in association with Deloitte has recently released a research report entitled “Deconstructing the Cloud: The New Growth Frontier for Indian IT-BPO Sector”. The study reveals that, cloud computing is expected to have a significant impact on the services industry, in terms of services offered, delivery mechanisms and business models. The Indian market for cloud computing is expected to grow by $16 billion in 2020. About two-third of this growth will be due to new businesses and the rest will come from existing service lines.

Mr.Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM says,

“Cloud computing is reshaping the Indian IT market by generating new opportunities for IT providers and driving changes in traditional IT offerings.."

According to IDC, digital data in India is expected to be around 40,000 petabytes in 2010 and this number is projected to shoot up to 2.3 million petabytes in 2020. This slowly leads to an information explosion with cloud in the middle, as more and more Indian companies are looking to leverage the cost advantages of the cloud.

A research study conducted by Zinnov Management Consulting reveals that private cloud in India will help save Indian companies up to 50% of their infrastructure costs and will also create more than 1 lakh jobs by 2015.

Gartner executive programs survey of CIOs in India identifies cloud computing as the top technology priority for CIOs in 2011. Currently, no one reports having the majority of IT running in the cloud or on SaaS technologies, but over the next four years CIOs in India expect this number to increase to 67 percent. The survey also reveals that Indian companies will adopt new cloud services much faster than originally anticipated.

With corporate giants taking aggressive measures in leveraging the power of the cloud, it would be very interesting to monitor the growth of the cloud landscape in India in the coming years.
